It’s a challenging time. I think we’re all feeling it, aren’t we? More burnout, more uncertainty. It’s like we’re walking through a fog, not sure which way is up anymore. Inflation, market ambiguity, price hikes, strapped budgets—these are the landscapes we’re navigating. And amidst all this, sellers and sales leaders are reaching their breaking points. It’s a tough road, but there are ways to identify, battle, and hopefully alleviate burnout and a sense of joylessness.

Acknowledgment: The first step is acknowledging the feeling. Burnout manifests differently for everyone—exhaustion, joylessness, a sense of being overwhelmed. It’s like being caught in a whirlwind of tasks, with no end in sight. Recognizing it is crucial.

Connecting & Gratitude: Next, I shrink my bubble. I focus on what’s within my control and what I am thankful for even in the toughest days. One thing I can control is who I connect with. I confide in trusted individuals—mentors, close friends, and definitely my wife. Expressing myself, unloading the burden, brings immediate relief. It’s like taking a deep breath after holding it in for too long.

Discipline: Then comes ruthless discipline in scheduling. I prioritize non-negotiables. If something can wait until tomorrow, I let it wait. It’s about focusing on what’s essential, what can alleviate some of the pressure in the immediate moment.

Passions: Infusing passion into my day is crucial. Despite a busy schedule, I carve out time for things that refuel me. Whether it’s hitting the gym before everyone else wakes up or listening to uplifting tunes, these moments reset me. Knowing what refuels you, even in the midst of exhaustion, is vital.

Mindfulness: Lastly, it’s about being mindful of your well-being. Sometimes, burnout requires more than self-care. It’s okay to ask for help, to seek professional support if needed. Understanding where you are on the burnout spectrum is essential. And as leaders, we have a responsibility to foster a culture where people feel comfortable expressing their struggles.

Leadership Responsibility: Leaders set the tone for organizational culture. By being open about our own struggles and supporting others, we create an environment where people feel valued and understood. Checking in with team members, offering support, and recognizing when someone needs a break—all these contribute to a healthier work environment.

Hope and Resilience: At the end of the day, it does get better. It’s a journey, but with effort and time, things improve. Each person’s path to alleviating burnout may differ, but the key is to take proactive steps and prioritize self-care.

Music as Therapy: Diving into music is therapeutic. Whether it’s the smooth sounds of Frank Sinatra or the Eagles or the energizing “Don’t Stop Believin'” by Journey and the greatest hits of Queen, music has a way of lifting my spirits. It’s not just anecdotal—science backs it up. So, find what resonates with you and let the music guide you to a better place.

In the midst of burnout, remember, you’re not alone. Take a moment to breathe, reach out for support, and prioritize your well-being. It’s a journey, but with resilience and self-care, you’ll emerge stronger on the other side.

Keep going, don’t stop believing, and dive into what refuels you. Nothing good or bad lasts.
