“Birth of a Salesman” is a work of fiction that doubles as a sales advice manual.
“Birth of a Salesman” examines the villains and the heroes of the landscape of Corporate America but also embraces a whole other culture: the student of sales who wants to learn how to make a million.
The experience of “Birth of a Salesman” is learning how to be the best salesperson in the world from someone who already did the stumbling and falling for you. Not only is “his” instructional novel laid out interspersed between chapters but his credentials are splashed on the pages all around it. This book has been years in the making; the words and speeches are realistic and the practices preached work.
The manuscript tells the tale of Vincent Scott, a wildly popular and successful yet rebellious corporate leader, who runs an advertising department for a sizeable company and is writing his own book called “The Selling Game.” The chapters of his book are strategically placed throughout the overall body of work as they illustrate lessons he learned along the road to success. As he writes his book and professionally heads into a very pivotal time in his career, he draws upon memories of the clashes, controversy, friends and foes that shaped his rise to power over the last ten years for reference. Along the way, he has had his heart broken, suffered losses, stood up repeatedly to corrupt superiors and been to hell and back, but he is still standing as he leads his team through a dark period.
For, in the professional realm, Vincent and the team he commandeers are heading into the murky waters of an uncertain future: their tyrannical boss is in the midst of an ethics investigation that was brought on by their mutiny. The fate of their department hangs in the balance and Vincent Scott is the only one who can lead them through. However, when the company stands by his supervisor, the operation backfires and the backlash results in a conspiracy to set Vincent up for a fall. He quickly learns which allies will remain faithful and the vast majority who hastily abandon him. It is only through that experience that Vincent learns the greatest lessons of all.
